After my previous post, conditions deteriorated rapidly with wind and rain intensifying. We did manage to stay open until 8 pm Saturday and lost power at 830pm. We spent alot of time at the front door trying to keep water from blowing in. We were some of the lucky ones and had power back 16 hours later and we opened back up at 4 pm on Sunday.
12:14pm Saturday 8/27/2011
Open for business!! Winds not too bad and rain only coming in waves. Come watch the storm from out sunroom (temporarily re-named Storm Room)!
On August 13, 2011 CDR (Child Development Resources) had a 5K run to raise funds for families in the Historic Triangle.
I have personally benefitted from CDR services when my wife & I took several classes on parenting and childbirth that we attended at Sentara Hospital and sponsored by CDR. Check out all the services thathey provide at http://www.cdr.org/
Last year Food For Thought sponsored one of our staff, Daniel V, in the race. Daniel raised $500 last year for CDR.
This year Daniel put together TEAM FOOD FOR THOUGHT which consisted of nine runners from all ages and nationalities.
1) Sammy Hopkins 10 1/2 months – USA
2) Oleg Surma 20 years old – Ukraine
3) Marija Dutka 21 – Ukraine
4) Nadya Smeyko 22 – Russia
5) Daniel Varela 23 – USA via Columbia
6) Jen Shirkhani 24 – USA
7) Marika Konysheva-Hopkins 30 – Russia
Howard Hopkins 48 USA
9) Ed Ransford 62 – USA via Boston
The race started at 7pm. Although it rained most of the day the evening cleared up but the air was very humid.
It was great to see the large gathering of people with many familiar faces from Food For Thought guests that were also running in the race.
The gun sounded and off we all went. First to cross the finish line for TEAM FOOD FOR THOUGHT was the Oleg Surma with Sammy Hopkins coming in 2nd for TEAM FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
We all had such a good time that I am sure we will have even more runners in next year’s race.
